Epitaph is a monumental composition by legendary jazz bassist and composer Charles Mingus. With over 4,000 measures and a duration exceeding two hours, this masterpiece encapsulates Mingus’s stylistic diversity and emotional depth, fusing elements of swing, bop, Latin, and classical music. Although Mingus began sketching Epitaph in 1962, the full work was not discovered until after his death in 1979.
In 2015, the Clasijazz Orchestra performed Epitaph at the Maestro Padilla Auditorium in Almería, delivering one of the few complete renditions of the piece worldwide. This performance was acclaimed for its fidelity to Mingus’s original spirit and the orchestra’s ability to manage the complexity and richness of the composition.
The Clasijazz Orchestra, founded in Almería in 1998, is a prominent Spanish ensemble dedicated to the promotion of jazz and other artistic expressions. Under the direction of saxophonist Ramón Cardo, the orchestra has tackled complex repertoires and collaborated with internationally renowned artists.
